James Baldwin said it best: "For these are all our children, and we will profit by or pay for whatever they become."

Go to the Area Board web site http://www.areaboard3.org/

If this is the first time you have visited , welcome! the Area Board is a Federally and State funded organization that provides, among other things, Advocacy supports to families who have children receiving special education services and supports from school districts as well as those who receive services from the regional center system.

The Area Board also provides clients rights advocacy services for the men and women who live at Sierra Vista Development Center. Additionally, the Area Board has developed a "mentor" program at Sierra Vista which matches volunteers with the men and women living at the facility; the project is called Volunteer Advocacy Services and as you explore our site you will find our coordinator Mary Agnes Nolan's phone number if your interested in learning more about the program opportunities.

The Area Board under contract with the Department of Developmental Services also provides a Life Quality Assessment to more than 1100 individuals on an annual bases living in the 10 counties we serve. The assessment is a snap shot of life's interest and goals and is used as a tool by many individuals in developing a guide for the future. Again, as you explore our site you will find more information out about the project as well as the projects coordinators Sonya and Kathy.

If your interested in knowing more about the Area Board take a few minutes and search our site or feel free to call our office and talk with us about your interest in knowing more about what the Area Board does as well as how we might assist you and your family with advocacy services.

The Transition of Area Boards

It has been almost 20 months since the Area Boards and State Council joined as partners in developing a stronger voice for families and consumers with developmental disabilities in California.

According to the Legislature and the Lanterman Act Section 4548 (m) "It is the intent of the Legislature that areaboards shall maintain local discretion in conducting their advocacy activities. The state council shall not direct the advocacy activities of the area baords, except when specifically authorized by law, or when necessary to ensure compliance with federal requirements".

Section 4553 (a) " The Legislature finds and decalres that the advocacy, coordinating, appeals, and other related functions of area boards cannot be effectively provided unless area boards have staff support services from personnel directly responsible and accountable to the area board and state council. Area board staff shall be state employees of the state council ".

The Area Board welcomes your thoughts and comments regarding our efforts to provide advocacy and related supports and services to families in our ten county catchment area. You can e-mail your comments to :
