James Baldwin said it best: "For these are all our children, and we will profit by or pay for whatever they become."

Parents and Residents of the Sacramento City Unified School District,

We ask each of you to take this survey and attend at least one community meeting in your area (most areas have two meetings scheduled).

As most of you know, your school, and many others throughout the state, have been struggling financially the past few years due to State Education Budget Cuts and declining enrollment.  Our District has been working within our means to maintain a high quality course of study for the students and an excellent staff to teach them.  However, within the next few months, there will need to be some very tough decisions made in order to keep the quality we have all become accustomed.

So what can be done?  We are conducting a consolidation feasibility study within our Community.  Consolidation may be a viable option to help the schools maintain programs in the near future, but there will need to be sacrifices.  In order to have a significant financial impact, some schools may need to be closed in any consolidation scenario.

Another option to sustain our school would be to add additional services to the school site to raise funds to keep the school open in its current location. This could be public services like those provided by the city, county and state, private services like businesses (coffee shop or specialty stores) or other educational services such as branch libraries that would be available to the community evening and weekends, or college, technical, and adult education classes.

Be creative in your suggestions, it is an extremely serious financial crisis that we are faced with. The District has been able to keep most of our schools open while cutting almost 100 million dollars in the past 7 years that may not be possible any longer.

“How can you help? Share your ideas on how to best use our facilities to help us remain fiscally solvent, and ensure outstanding learning environments and programs for our students. Please share your ideas and questions as we work to secure resources to ensure quality programs and the success of each student during these challenging times.” Susan Miller, Superintendent
